Eltham is a small town in South Taranaki of the North Island, New Zealand; it is situated 50 kilometres from New Plymouth.
Eltham is the most highly industrialised town (per capita) in New Zealand and is known mainly for its cheese. Visitors come to Eltham to enjoy the delightful Victorian and Edwardian buildings; the walk around stunning Lake Rotokare, which is fed by natural springs; and the chance to purchase locally made gourmet cheeses.
The town also holds the record for the world's biggest scone. The local Four Square supermarket broke the existing Guinness World Record with a huge 121kg scone.
Eltham History
Settlement started in Eltham in the 1870s with areas of forested land being taken up. A abundance of sawmilling companies emptied the district they found the area to be ideal for dairy farming. In 1884 Eltham was declared a town district, in 1901 Eltham was declared a borough and became in 1989 it became part of South Taranaki District.
