Dargaville is a unique town in the North Island of New Zealand. It is the Gateway to the Kauri Forest and is built along the edge of the wide Northern Wairoa River in the Northland region. It is two and a half hours drive north-west of Auckland.
Dargaville has grown rapidly as a tourist destination within New Zealand. Its contemporary cafes, restaurants, hotels and motels will satisfy any visitor's requirements and stand alongside icons of the past such as the Gumdigger Statue.
Dairy farming is the main local industry of Dargaville and the district also produces around two thirds of New Zealand's kumara crop. Great spots to visit are the Dargaville Museum which has an interesting collection of Maori artefacts, shipwreck treasures and gum digging exhibits and nearby Matakohe, a theme museum honours the historic kauri industry.
Dargaville History
The town is named after timber merchant and politician Joseph McMullen Dargaville. It was founded during the 19th century kauri gum and timber trade, and briefly had New Zealand's largest population.
