Coromandel History

Coromandel was first visited in 1820 by HMS Coromandel. The ship brought the Coromandel town, and the Peninsula. In 1852 the discovery of gold at Driving Creek brought a boom to Coromandel town. A lot of history dating from that time is still seen in the town today with the old buildings and artefacts.  The regenerating native forest on the hills is also a reminder of the environmental damage brought by this pioneering period.
