Carterton

Carterton is a small historic town in the Wairarapa Region of the North Island, New Zealand. It is located 14 kilometres southwest of Masterton and 80 kilometres northeast of Wellington.

A great time to visit Carterton is in spring time as the town is known as the 'Daffodil Capital of New Zealand'. Since the 1920's every September there is The Daffodil Festival which lets everyone pick heaps of daffodils from a large flower-packed field.

Carterton has a small collection of attractions that are great to look at such as the antique shops, the fascinating paua shell factory and a nice choice of cafes and restaurants. For an outdoor exploration, visitors to the region can hike in the nearby Tararua Forest Park and the Waiohine Gorge, which has an impressive swing bridge.

Carterton History

Carterton was founded in 1857 and was originally known as Three Mile Bush. Back then the town served as housing for workers building the road between Wellington and Masterton. It was later renamed after Charles Rooking Carter.
