Descend spider-like down into the black depths of Ruakuri Cave and experience the best caving has to offer. Abseil the breath-taking tomo, zip into a black water-filled abyss, glide through caverns of glowworms and then scramble and slide your way up waterfalls and through squeezes.

Description

Your black water rafting experience begins by checking in at our base where you await your adventure.

Your guide will then take you to be suited up into a wetsuit and given appropriate caving equipment and footwear. We have a lock up area for valuables, towels and clothes. This is an excellent opportunity to take photos of you in your gear before departing.

This trip takes you further upstream of the Ruakuri Reserve where your guides will instruct you in abseiling. You will then descend 35 metres into the upstream sections of the Ruakuri streamway. You will explore the passages of the Ruakuri cave and see stalagtites and stalagmites. Enjoy the thrill of the flying fox then stop for a hot drink and snack in the cave.

This trip includes floating on the tubes and also has a lovely display of glowworms. There are jumps and a rock climbing option for the more adventurous. This trip has a 5 hour turnaround time.

When you return to base there will be hot showers and hot soup and snacks at our Café. This is a great opportunity to chat with your guide and reflect on your experience.

Session Details

5 hours. We operate 364 days per year weather permitting. It is advisable to book in advance as trips are limited in number. Summer months and public holidays are extremely busy. We ask you check in at least 15 minutes prior to trip departure to fill in necessary forms.

Experience Participants

Our guide to client ratio is 1:4 with a maximum of 8 per tour. In special circumstances we will allocate a 3rd guide if necessary.

Participant Guidelines

Participants must be 16 years of age and minimum weight of 45kg. Maximum weight of 125kg. Any participants who have mobility problems or disabilities must notify our company when inquiring or booking.

Participant Dress Code

Please bring your swimsuit for underneath wetsuits and a towel to dry off afterward. You can bring toiletries for showers and camera?s to record your experience. We will provide caving equipment, wetsuits and footwear. We also have lock up areas for valuables.

Other Information

We have secure lockup areas for valuable and clothing. All trips include a free snack and hot soup. Free admission to the Waitomo Caves Museum is included.
