Milford Sound Experience - TouringTake an unforgettable journey through the magical Milford Sound and experience the true beauty of the South Island. Discover the history of this world famous region, travel through awe-inspiring landscapes, and see glacier carved valleys and dramatic cascading waterfalls.

One thousand years ago, Maori travelled overland to Milford in search of the much prized pounamu (greenstone). These treks from the east used traditional pathways across passes such as Mackinnon Pass on the Milford Track. Today, this Milford experience follows in the footsteps of the ancient Maori and takes you deep into Fiordland National Park.

Journey through the Homer tunnel, a 1.2km tunnel drilled through solid rock. Hear the legends of the gold miners and how they prospected for gold in the rugged ranges. View the beautiful Mirror lakes before navigating over the footbridge at the imposing and spectacular Chasm.

On arrival at Milford Sound you have two options:

Option One: The Encounter

Board the Encounter Cruise for a 2.5 hour intimate and interactive exploration of Milford Sound. See the imposing sight of Mitre Peak rising 1,692m (5,560ft) from the sea as roving guides keep you informed with their local knowledge and experience of the Fiord. A delicious snackbox lunch is included onboard your cruise (Available from October 1 2010).

Option Two: The Discovery

Deepen your understanding at the Milford Sound Discovery Centre of the fiord’s formation, the Maori explorers who first found Piopotahi (Milford Sound), and early European tourism. Then, descend 10m underwater into a spacious chamber with views of the rich marine ecosystem, its primeval creatures and rare Black Coral.
