A full day course introducing you to the exhilarating sport of ice climbing held amongst the spectacular ice walls in the lower part of the magnificent Fox Glacier. This adventure will give you an unforgettable insight into the vertical world where people meet mountains.

Description

Before heading to the ice you will be equipped with specialized mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axes and technical gear.

Guides who instruct on these days receive special training to ensure that they teach skills in the correct order so that you advance quickly. You will be impressed by the quick progress that you can make. The maximum instructor to pupil ratio is 1:4 ensuring that you receive close personal attention.

There are many steep walls to challenge you and you will quickly master basic cramponing and ice axe techniques. The adrenaline will start to flow as you challenge yourself with longer and steeper pitches. Using ice tools and the front points of your crampons, you climb vertical and, at times, overhanging ice walls and pinnacles. The airy moves required seem quite terrifying initially but there is no danger, as at all times you are secured by a top rope attached to your harness.

Session Details

Ice Climbing Instruction days report at 8 a.m The trip is approximately 8 hours duration from the time clients report to the time that they are driven by bus back to our base. This activity runs everyday except Christmas Day.

Participant Guidelines

A minimum of 2 people is required. Participants must have a reasonable fitness level and some agility. No previous experience is required.

Participant Dress Code

Please bring 3-4 layers of warm upper body clothing, long sleeved top and trousers, sunglasses and sun protection. Jeans are not recommended. Cotton pants or trackpants are preferable. Lunch and drink.

Other Information

Modern technical and safety equipment, climbing boots and socks, raincoats, overtrousers, special backpacks are provided.
